Our History

With a rich history dating back over a hundred years, the Republican Party of Cuyahoga County has been an influential force in local politics, championing the principles that have made our nation strong. We have consistently stood firm in our commitment to individual liberty, limited government, free-market economy, and a strong national defense.

  • 1800's

    1854

    The beginnings of the RPCC can be traced back to a statewide convention held in Columbus, Ohio, on March 22, 1854. The convention was convened to oppose the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act and marked the emergence of the new Republican party that opposed the further extension of slavery

    1855

    The RPCC was officially established and was made up of diverse groups, including conservative Whigs, Free-Soilers, Union Democrats, and Know Nothings. It actively supported John C. Fremont, the first presidential candidate of the national party, who won a majority in Cleveland and the county.

    Late 19th Century

    The RPCC continued to grow and dominate Cleveland politics during and after the Civil War. Important party leaders from this time included Silas Merchant in the 1870s and William H. Gabriel from 1885-90​

  • 1900's

    1888-1904

    The RPCC played a significant role in supporting presidential campaigns, including those of Benjamin Harrison and William McKinley. After the death of influential party leader Marcus Hanna in 1904, leadership transitioned to Senator Theodore Burton and later Maurice Maschke, signifying the RPCC’s adaptability and resilience.

    1920s-1930s

    The RPCC was the dominant party during this period, and George Bender took control of the Cuyahoga County Republican organization in 1938, demonstrating the party’s continued influence.

    1947-1970s

    Despite facing challenges in a changing political landscape, the RPCC continued to remain active and relevant. It played a pivotal role in the election of two mayors, Ralph Perk (1972-77) and George Voinovich (1980-1988), showcasing the party’s ability to mobilize voters effectively.

    1996

    James Peter Trakas was elected chairman of The Republican Party of Cuyahoga County, demonstrating his dedication to the party’s mission and values.

    2005

    Rob Frost led the RPCC with dedication, guiding the party through numerous election cycles and advocating for the party’s principles at the county level.

    2020

    Lisa Stickan took over as chair of the RPCC, becoming a symbol of continued leadership and commitment to the party’s mission. Her tenure has been marked by her staunch support for the party’s principles and her dedication to maintaining strong relationships with party members and the community.
